Happo One |
Often mispronounced by non Japanese as Happo - 1, the correct
pronunciation is Happo
Oh-ne. However to most people it is just
"Happo". One of the older ski resorts in Japan with
over half a century of history.
Hakuba's signature resort and the largest of all resorts in the
valley. Shot to prominence internationally after hosting the
men's and women's downhill at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics.
Not too much in the way of absolute beginners slopes, but plenty
of terrain for anyone with a day or two under their belt. 3-4
mogul runs, a great snow park, and ideal terrain for free
riding. Due to the size of Happo you need a couple of days at
least to explore the whole mountain.
There are a number of on slope dining options. The largest is at
the top of the Gondola, which has a 500 seat dining hall as well
are MacDonald's, and several other options. The Virgin Cafe at
the top of the Alpen Quad offers great views and can be a nice
place to sip a cappuccino.
Happo has 4 bases, with most shuttle buses arriving / departing
from the Nakiyama base.
Other shuttles run from Nakiyama to the
Gondola and Sakka bases via the Happo Bus terminal. Make sure
you get on the right direction as they run clockwise and counter
clock wise and you may be in for a longish ride if you choose
the wrong option.
Until the 2008-2009 season, the patrol was quite relaxed with
tree skiing, and out of bounds areas. However this tightened up
in 2008-09 in line with the Hakuba Local Rules policy.
People wanting to ski mostly at Happo generally stay in the
Happo Village or Wadano Forest Area. Happo Village has a number
of very affordable accommodation properties, while Wadano hosts
the higher end hotels and apartments.
